NEWPORT
No stay in this area is complete without the visit to
Newport and it's grand mansions, great
shopping and quaint wharf and harbor center.
Newport has a historic district known as Ochre Point/Cliffs Historic District.
It's a combination of many types of architecture, but most obviously late Victorian.
Just a 1/2 hour car ride over the Jamestown and Newport Bridges with a
scenic view of Narragansett Bay below brings you to this historic place, the home of
the America's Cup in yachting, the Newport
Museum of Yachting, the
International Tennis Hall of Fame,
Newport's famous mansions of the
'rich and famous, colonial Fort Adams
and the
Eisenhower House at Fort Adams State Park. Tickets to visit single or more
than one mansion can be purchased at any of the historic palaces. Beautiful beaches
complete with water sports, the famous "Cliff Walk" and fine dining and shopping
along the cobblestone streets of Thames Street at the water's edge of Newport's
Bowen's Wharf.

Here's a look at just a part of what is known as
the "Cliff Walk", that public access walk that combines the natural beauty of
the Newport shore line with the architectural history of Newport's gilded age. Wildflowers, birds,
geology ... all add to this delightful Walk.
Dine and drink at the outside patio and bar or on the sprawling lawn at The Inn at
Castle Hill. This place is fantastic for sweeping views of the
Castle Hill Lighthouse and boats sailing in and out of the bay. Don't
forget to bring a blanket to sit on the lawn.

 Visit Hammersmith Farm,
formerly JFK's Summer White House retreat, or just fly a kite and picnic at
Bretton Point State Park. Hammersmith Farm is also where the beautiful
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis grew up and also where she had her wedding reception
when she married a young Jack Kennedy. Camelot at it's best.
